Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is an inherited genetic disorder that affects connective tissue. This can cause joints to be extra-flexible. Some people experience joint pain.

EDS is not primarily a nervous system problem. However, EDS can have secondary effects that are best treated by a nervous system specialist.

  • Blood flow: decreased blood pressure or circulation can cause symptoms ranging from lightheadedness to migraines to pain
  • Neural tension: joints may stretch beyond the capacity of the nerves to move
  • Upregulation of the sympathetic nervous system: with any concerning diagnosis, patients may experience anxiety and upregulation of the sympathetic nervous system. This may cause many symptoms such as poor digestion, widespread pain, poor sleep and fatigue that are not caused by the primary condition
  • Decreased movement and activity: due to fear or fatigue, patients may slowly decrease activity over time, resulting in weakness and even more difficulty

Fortunately, all these secondary effects are treatable. Make an appointment with Colorado Nerve Care to restore full participation in your life.
