Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy describes a burning, shooting pain down a limb or around the torso that occurs due to compression of the nerve root at the spine. New research also suggests that radiculopathy symptoms can be brought on by release of chemicals at the dorsal root ganglion.

Physical therapy treatment for radiculopathy consists of returning movement, space and circulation to the affected nerve. This is accomplished through:

  • Manual therapy: moving joints and tissues to create space in the spine
  • Nerve sliders: gliding the nerve along its track to increase movement
  • Blood flow: exercise, heat and breathing to improve circulation and healing
